Kenya’s Reynold Cheruyoit clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 1500m final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo today.
Cheruiyot, who transitioned seamlessly from junior to senior ranks, held his nerve in a fast-paced race to secure a podium spot and extend Kenya’s proud tradition in middle-distance running.
His compatriot Timothy Cheruiyot, the 2019 world champion and Olympic silver medalist, had looked on course for a medal after controlling the race for the better part of the final two laps. However, the final sprint proved decisive as he faded in the homestretch, finishing fourth with a time of 3:34.50.
Cheruiyot followed closely to secure bronze, marking a significant milestone in his blossoming career.
The result underscores the generational shift in Kenyan middle-distance running, as the younger Cheruiyot announced his arrival on the global stage while the veteran Timothy continues to fight for podium finishes in one of athletics’ most competitive events.
